Halloween Kiddie Candy

This will be mine and Jim's first Halloween together...meaning we'll actually BE together. It's very exciting. If Donnie doesn't let Jim take off so we can go up to see his family and friends for Halloween, we're going to pass out candy to the kids probably from my parent's house, because there is no way we'd be getting trick or treaters at our apartment, there's no easy access to the door and it's behind an alleyway. Even *I* get scared walking down there to get to my place sometimes. But anyway, I was at Target yesterday with my mom doing some crazy shopping with coupons and it turned out they have this HUGE, HUGE Halloween candy section. I remember when I used to go trick or treating, it would get old after a while because ALL I would ever get were fun sized snickers, reese's cups, milky ways and the occasional three mustkateer. I mean shit, what if a kid was allergic to chocolate? There's no fun in that for kids who can't eat chocolate. So I noticed some things that I may end up getting for Halloween candy for the kids that are pretty awesome. Here's the stuff I was in love with when I was growing up:

1. Halloween-inspired cans of soda. Who hands out those cans of soda anymore? I remember getting a really cool can of soda one year from my parent's friends, the Klines, who gave me a fruity soda drink with Nintendo's Yoshi on the can. It was awesome, and it was better than the run of the mill chocolate bar.

2. Those expensive ring-pops, glow pops, etc. Anything that you can't buy in bulk in the store, but rather you have to buy separately and was at LEAST a dollar was pretty cool to get on Halloween. It's not cost effective at all, but it really did excite me.

3. Bags of chips and stuff. All that sweet stuff makes me crave salt, really bad. So bad for children, and bad for me, but I needed salt just as much as I needed the sugar, and some people bought the bags in bulk and they still sell them at Target.

4. Handmade baggies with popcorn and candy corn mixed together and stuff. Okay so these days, it's pretty much taboo to do things like this. You're not supposed to give out candy to kids that you have tampered with (i.e. put together yourself) or that are't wrapped, which is lame to think that this happy holiday has been turned into nothing but fear, fear, and more fear. But I liked it whne someone put forth the effort. I remember the one Bearnstein Bears Halloween book I owned, where the Bear cubs went to one house they thought was occupied by a witch, but instead she was this nice old lady who let them in her house so she could give them homeade cookies and candy apples. Now it's unheard of, which is sad, because I love cookies and candy apples. Plus you never really see a child around Bristol walking out past 8 o'clock anyways. They start nowadays at 4, because their parents don't want them walking around in the dark. Give me a break.

5. Jelly belly jelly beans. Who doesn't like these? Besides people who don't like jelly beans, of course. They're not cheap but they're a LOT better than the disgusting standard regular Jelly beans you get at the dollar store.

6. Charms lolli pops. Anything with gum or a tootsie roll in the center. 'Nuff said.

Target has these really cool mini-sodas made by the Jones Soda Company, and they're decorated like scary pumpkins, black cats and witches. They has distinct flavors, too. I bought a four-pack of "Spider Cider", which tastes just like a sweet, artificial apple cider. They also had Gruesome grape, Candy Corn, and other flavors I didn't get a good look at. I think Jim and I are going to be the cool house to go to this year if we stick around, and hand out those little cans of soda and some of those chips. I love Halloween!

ahhh. i remember handmade halloween trail mix haha. that's what i called it anyway yummm. i always got excited when i got a huggie! those were the best! also, one year there was a house and they always bought two mall gift certificates of 15 dollars and had it hid inside the little mix bags of candy. so you got to gamble and try to pick a good candy bag that had a gift certificate in it. it was awesome. even though i never got it, i remember there being sweet candy inside. sweet as in awesome, not neccessarily sweet in flavor haha.

anyways those jones sodas sound awesome, how cute! i love jones soda!!

Omg i remember those huggie things...those little baggies people could buy to put extra amounts of candy and other stuff in. Sometimes people would put in those little skull and spider rings. Those were fun, and I remember getting excited about them too.

And omg, someone gave out mall gift certificates? Were they rich?

The only problem with the mini Jones soda cans is that for four of them, you gotta spend $1.47. That gets expensive if you're trying to buy them to give to trick or treaters, but I don't really care, we're probably gonna get three packs and then the lucky first trick or treaters are gonna be the ones who get 'em.
